Xtrcrylics Problems (think I spelt that wrong)
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 12:22 PM

Hey there folks I m trying to us the Xtracyrylics paints from Hannants , I ve sprayed them a couple of times and they went on ok but , now I seem to be have problems. The paint will not cover well in some area's it forms circles of bare plastic as if it wont adhere to the plastic , this is on a old airfix 1:72 meteor I washed the plastic down before painting , over all how do you guys rate these paints ? , the colour representation is really good but I m getting ifffy results with them I think , I spray at 15psi and thin bout 10% .

Any clues or opinions most welcome

I've used a few bottles and got great coverage. Pressure was probably 15-18psi, and I believe thinned about the same as you but maybe 20%.

I did use Tamiya superfine primer though. Have never sprayed it on bare plastic, but I doubt priming is required. Maybe there was something remaining on your plastic that whatever you washed it with didn't completely remove.

Circles of bare plastic sounds like you didn't clean off all the mold release.  I've had that happen on a resin kit I was working on.  Best solution is to take some soap and water to it, let it dry completely and then try to cover up the baare spots.

I've used a couple of different Xtracrylics colours & never had a problem with them & I spray over automotive primer, also used the Xtracolour enamels and they are superb, I've found that if your going to thin the paints maybe thin a little less than recommended, I use a Terumo syringe to thin paint & do it by eye, couldn't give you a exact amount but it works for meMy 2 cents [2c].

I think I m going to try the enamels , I just seem to be happier with enamels , maybe the smell triggers some childhood memories Big Smile [:D]

Or maybe I just understand them better , the Glosters on the mend now too
