Tamiya paints and "model master" question.
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 8, 2006 5:15 PM
Hello all,

I spent some time this afternoon in Hobby Lobby (sadly the best hobby store in my area) and all they had was testors paint in the little glass bottles and larger, rounder bottles of model master.  Is model master made my testors, and is it any good?

Also, I'm preparing to build a 1/48 Tamiya Do335 (Heavily armed version) and the colors are AS-23, 24, and 5.  All the conversions online have Tamiya paints beginning with "x" not "as."
I keep seeing people talk about RLM colors, what are they?

Needless to say, I have a lot of questions about everything, but I'll save your time and ask those at a later date. Captain [4:-)]

The Tamiya "AS" range are spray cans. (AS= "Aircraft Spray", I believe)  The "X" and "XF" range are the "normal" Tamya paints. Oddly enough the X and XF numbers are consistent between their acrylics and enamels (where available) but bear no relation to the spray cans at all.

RLM is a widely used acronym for Reichsluftfahrtministerium (Reich Air Ministry) RLM paint codes refer to the paint colours specified by the ministry for use on the real aircraft.

I just built the Do-335 Anteater trainer several months ago.. I'll see if I still have the instructions from it and give you the call out on the color it lists for the AS colors (I think those are their lacquer paintrs which aren't sold in the US).

You will probably have to order the colors from an online site like www.squadron.com or www.greatmodels.com for that plane.  I know the HL near me doesn't stock them... MM is good and I have not had a lot of problems from them, they should work fine for what you are doing.

the topside colors for the Do335 should be RLM 81 - "Braunviolet" OR RLM 70 "Schwarzgrun" and RLM - 82 "Olivegrun" as the basecoat, the names in German are what you will see on the MM bottle so that is what you should order.  The undersides are RLM 76 - Lichtblau which is also available from MM on either of those websites I mentioned.

there is a good site tracking down the camo pattern the Do335 actually used and the author has several opinions on it.  He also thnks it is possible that RLM81 was used with paint RELABLED OR "MIXED WITH RLM 70"   This is the site:

Personally I did my Do335 with the RLM 82 and the RLM 70 as I has specific guidelines I was following from the descriptions of an aircraft captured by the British at the end of the war...

Here is an incomplete pic of it:

Here is the original AC:

Here's the a few links with pics on the Do335 in both the trainer/nightfighter and single seater config I bookmarked while doing mine:

Good luck!!!

Wow, thanks for the responses, especially Tom, that's great!

During my search for RLM 81, 82, and 70 on the squadron site there were two results that appeared to be very different colors.
Aeromaster from USA and Gunze-Sangyo from Japan were the two different manufacturers.  Frankly, I'd rather go with the Aeromaster because there's 7ml more in the bottle and the color appears to be lighter/more vivid.  Plus, aeromaster is the only manufacturer listed for the light blue.

The greatmodels site really has a wider selection of manufacturers for the RLM colors, which would you recommend?

I just found this site http://www.luftwaffepics.com/ldo3356.htm  great pics if anyone else out there is thinking about building a 335.  There are 8 pages of great pictures, even a few dozen in color.
