Tamiya Spray Paint Question
Posted by stuboyle on Thursday, July 13, 2006 10:28 PM
I am in the process of getting the paints I need to 2 Tamiya cars, the Honda RA-272 and Lotus 25.  They call for the following colors:

TS-16 yellow
TS-17 gloss aluminum
TS-49 racing green
TS-7 racing white

These are spray paints and I want to use my airbrush.  I don't see a exact match for these in Tamiya bottles.  What do you suggest?

Find a straw with the inside diameter of the outside diameter of the nozzle on the spray can and decant it into another bottle. Let it sit for a while (sometimes it fizzles for a while) and airbrush away. You might want to find an aluminum tube you can CA glue to a nozzle that you can clean and save for the next time you need to decant the paint (stolen from M. Usher's Thunder Roadster article pg 38, November 2005 FSM). The AS series of rattle cans seem to match the X & XF series of bottle paint, but the TS seems to follow it's own color gamut.

So long folks!

Thank Bgrigg for the reply.  Looking a little deeper into the issue, it appears some of these colors are hard to come by.  One of the colors or more of the colors was not even available directly from Tamiya! As an alternative, is there a conversion chart where I can get a bottled version from somone other than Tamiya?

There are Tamiya paint charts available here:

Here's a link to Tamiya's page of paint charts. You'll need to set your screen resolution quite large to read! (at least I do, darned aging eyes!)

Check your TS-49 Racing Green, that isn't listed but TS-43 is!

You might be able to get away with X-8 Lemon Yellow instead of TS-16 Yellow, and X-11 Chrome Silver instead of the TS-17 Gloss Aluminum. TS-7 Racing White is an "ivory" colour, and Tamiya bottle acrylics are definitely whiter! British Racing Green seems to be more of a problem. I don't have a lot of automotive paints, I do mostly WWII aircraft and armor. The few cars I do have I've used the rattle cans...

I did find another website with a couple of paint charts on it

http://oldbeacon.com/plans/colors/paint_charts.htm

Have you tried the Scale Auto website? http://www.scaleautomag.com/

The National Racing colors were never codified as a particular shade. So basically almost and dark green could suffice. Happy hunting!

So long folks!
