Tamiya paint designations
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 11:08 PM

I'm just a new guy to the modeling hobby.  Getting ready to build my first Tamiya kit which is a 1/48 F4F Wildcat.  When checking out paint scheme suggestions it will have:

  XF-3:2

+XF-5:1

for a particular area. I know the 'XF' designates 'flat paint'  and the numbers corolate to specific colors. What, though, do the 'colons' and the '+' sign mean?  Does it constitute a ratio?

Any help would be appreciated so I can find some other way to mess up the construction of this fine kit.

Exactly!

XF-3:2+ XF-5:1 is Tamiya's paint ratio for Zinc Chromate Green and means 2 parts XF-3 Flat Yellow mixed with 1 part XF-5 Flat Green. The big guess is how much to mix up so the color is consistant throughout the rest of the build!

So long folks!

The answer would be slighlty more than you need!

... and THAT would turn out to be slightly less than I THOUGHT I would need.

Usually.

Last time I mixed up Zinc Chromate I decided to mix up a bunch. So I used bottles as my measuring unit and ended up with a full ounce of pre-mixed paint. Still have a third of a bottle left.

Which, of course, will not be enough for one more aircraft... Wink [;)]
