Eclipse and Modelflex problems
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 11:16 PM
I just got an Eclipse gravity AB from Dixie and tried to do some work with Modelflex paint (unthinned). Used 35-40 psi and got a fair amount of pulsating/spitting of paint when trying to do fine work. I then thinned it to about 70% paint/30% water and tried again. This time still had some spitting/pulsing but the paint would splatter. Looking for some suggestions - lower airpressure and switch to alcohol thinners?

Thanks

I bet it's the water. I use enamels with my eclipse and thin about 50/50 and got better results on my first try with this brush than with years of practice with Aztek and Pasche VL. Never spatters. Try the new thinner and you should be able to go lower than 15 psi. I always go between 10 and 15 psi and the eclipse atomizes like a dream. I tried to spray watercolors thinned with water through my Sotar, crappy results. Water sucks unless you're swimming.

I went back and used Polly Scale railroad paint and Model Master acrylics with 20-25psi pressure - excellent results unthinned! No pulsing or spitting. This is what I had hoped the Eclipse was capable of.

BTW I tried some Polly S thinner and it cause the ModelFlex to coagulate. Is Polly S thinner not the right stuff to use with Polly Scale, Model Master, or Modelflex?

Thanks

I can't speak for pollyscale or medelflex but I do use model master (by default since no hobby shops in the area carry anything else) Their airbrush thinner works great with their paint but I found that some other thinners will cause the paint to coagulate. Stick with the recommended thinner for brushing, clean-up with whatever is cheap.

Also, would still at least try to work with thinned paint. The Eclipse can spray lines that are unbelievably thin. I've gotten model master lines smaller than 1/16th inch. I used to think people were lying when they talked about lines that thin from an airbrush.
