That depends on the brand of acrylic paint. e.g., for PollyScale, use water; for Tamiya, use 90 percent isopropyl alcohol. What brand are you using?

The proprietary thinners are sometimes worth using for actual dilution. For cleaning, cheaper alternatives are almost a necessity. Most acrylics are readily cleaned with Windex or Simple Green.

I use Disstilled Water to thin my arcylic paint. Thanks MikeV. and other for that tip.

The only difference between 90% alcohol and Tamiya thinner is that there is a retarder in the Tamiya one.  So the paint will not dry before getting to the model, which sometimes happen with plain alcohol or water.
No matter where you go ....... there you are.

You can get acrylic retarder in most artists' supply stores. One bottle will last a long time, as you use about 1-2 drops per batch of reduced paint (approximately 1 to 6 ml. of thinned paint).
