Just to update y'll

I went down to Philly today and I stoped by my old LHS and WOW that went down hill. Bur they did have some Tamiya Paint. I looked for the XF-17 Sea Blue that I was looking to get and OMG I opened it up and it looked all most Black. Hmmmmm way to dark. so I looked some more and saw X-3 Royal Blue and that looked more like it for I got 1 bottle.

Thanks for the help all

Bud

Be aware, that gray bird is early 1950's vintage. But it shore is purty.

Even if the real plane looks glossy, you should leave it flat because of the scale.  Or maybe more semi-flat than semi-gloss if you know what I mean.

Spraying through a straw into a container will make it easier to prevent it spraying everywhere.

Edit: doesn't look like quote wants to work.

I picked up a great little reference book on VF 17 squadron F4U's called VF 17 "Jolly Rogers" by Andre R. Zbiegniewski, Kagero publishing. It has a number of color profiles and lots of pictures of VF 17 in action during WWII. It also has a full decal sheet that includes markings for most of the top VF 17 pilots of the time. It’s on sale at Squadron for $3.99, might want to check it out, makes for great F4U reference.

That probably wouldn't help all that much as far as paint finish goes. Those planes were privately owned and leased to the production company. If I remember right there was some "talk" between the two parties about just how much hollywood "make-up" that was allowed on the birds. The owners liked to keep'em faily clean. Good for details though!..............stayCool [8D]

I like the war weary look of this bird and have been thinking about trying for the same effect on the one I'll be starting soon.

Ha, wish there was a simple answer. The US Navy Dark Blue airplanes were originally glossy, but sun and weather tended to flatten out the gloss quite a bit, so the answer is YES!

I'm doing my version glossy, and if any rivet counter comes to my house and argues that it should be flat, I shall beat them about the head and ears! Mischief [:-,]

So long folks!

I am still looking to see what would work better.

I was looking at the XF-17 before I posted this. So I might go with that

Thanks again all

Yea I saw the XF-17 on ebay, my LHS don't carry Tamiya Paint Sad [:(]  , Now that's flat and put gloss on for the decals and flat again, right ?

I also exclusively use Tamiya acrylics and if I were you I would simply try X-3 Royal blue and I would mix it with maybe X-4 blue or other shades to match the original Navy blue color.

Good luck

Bud, you might also check out Gunze-Sangyo 054 (Navy Blue) or Valejo Model Air 087 (Dark Sea Blue). Both are acrylic.

I do want to thank both of you for the tip on the paint, but I only want to use Acrylic Paint in my A/B. I don't want to start with that other paint, hehe Tongue [:P]

Do you know what would come close to this color paint ?

http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=86508

Maybe Navy Blue ?

What do you think ?

Thanks and have a GREAT day

It's been referred to as "decanting." Just get a small container, cover as much of the opening as possible to prevent backsplash and spray the paint into the bottle. You probably will need to let it sit for a few minutes to allow the gases to escape. The pour it into you color cup and you should be good to go.

It is not available in other format but you can use the spray can and shout into another container and then use it in your airbrush.  Someone has explained that method here but I don't remember who!
