Masking Alclad II
Posted by fuzzy on Sunday, August 13, 2006 3:13 AM

Alclad II has been recommended to me for a great  NMF . Is there a good how -to  source available for painting , masking ,decaling etc. with Alcad ? How would a person mask for different panel colors? Also do you have to clearcoat over the decals after applying them or just clean up around them and leave them alone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For masking panels try post-it notes or plumber's PTFE Thread Seal Tape. On some shades you cannot use decal solutions, they react with the metal and slowly turn black so you need to protect the paint first with a clear coat. Future/Klear is OK.

Many of your questions can be answered by going directly to the Alclad website. With regards to masking, most masking tapes will work with Alclad without removing it from the surface. I like 3M Blue Tape best as it leaves no residue. No need to clearcoat prior to or after decal application.

I've had recent great difficulty masking metal paints on a huge  B-36 model even after the paint was sealed with MM (flat in my case) residue was apparent. Post it notes may work. I've heard that Parafilm M is best. However I have no experience with it.

Good luck
