SilentAire Scorpion I Sound/Noise Levels
Posted by ewc2003 on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 10:20 AM

OK, reading the DixieArt.com page on SilentAire compressors, it touts sound levels "barely above a whisper"... what's the real deal?  I'm looking at getting one and am wondering if it's a good compressor for an apartment environment.  Thanks.

I got a Scorpion II from www.dixieart.com and it gos on and off but I would have to say that is is NO louder then your vacum, if that.  I like it a lot.

I'd call a vacuum rather loud.

I'm thinking about an Iwata Smart Jet or the 121ACN from Airbrush City. The Smart Jet depends on what the bidding ends up at.

OK I just started on my 1st cup of coffee when I posted that. It should say The Scorpion II is NOT as loud as a Vacuum and it does not stay on all the time when you are using it.

There, that's better Tongue [:P]

The company that makes the Scorpion compressors is Silentaire. Typing Silentaire in your search bar will give you their address. Click on it and then click on the compressor you're interested in. At the right hand side of the screen down toward the bottom you'll see a square titled noise chart. Click on the square and it will give you the decibel ratings for all their units, plus ratings for things such as refrigerater noise, normal conversation, etc. I don't know how accurate it is, as some guys who measured their units when they got them say companies tend to be generous towards their products' noise levels. Hope that helps

I have the Scorpion I, noise is not a issue with this unit.

I found this today while nosing around the web.  I think it would be useful for comparing prospective compressors against other recognizable sounds.  I notice that not all compressor manufacturers will state the noise level of their product.  I hope this is of some value to you.

Noise Levels

Noise levels are measured in decibels (dB). The higher the decibel level, the louder the noise.

Painful: 140 dB = air raid siren, jet engine

Extremely loud: 110 dB = rock music, model airplane

Very loud: 80 dB = alarm clock, busy street

Moderate: 50 dB = moderate rainfall

Faint: 30 dB = quiet library
