Couple of airbrush newbie questions
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 8:48 PM
Hi - I am Phil.
I'm addicated to WW2 armor and decided to give the airbrush a go.
I have been working with brushes all my life and i am ready for the next step.
I have chosen the Paasche H model and also bought some How-To books but i have 2 questions burning a hole in my brain and figured i'd ask some grizzled veterans -

Question 1:
I don't want to invest in a compressor just yet and was wondering if there is a regulator for Paasche H i could use to regulate the airflow from the propellant can ? I saw Revell had a regulator but i came up empty with paasche. If anyone has maybe even a part number etc I would certainly appreciate that.

and question #2 which is a dumb question but according to my old professor there are no dumb questions anyways.

How do you accurately transfer/measure the desired paint to thinner ratio into the airbrush jar without making a huge mess ? Eye Dropper ?...measuring cup ?

Again, any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Phil (the AirBrush Rookie)

I sometimes think the cumulative experience and knowledge of the forum members can answer any question in the world save how to make peace in the Middle East.

Go to Dixie Art http://www.dixieart.com/Hoses.html and scroll down to part 99 3B Tank/Propal valve.

I just eyeball the thinner to paint, but I use acrylics which may be more forgiving. I know some people use syringes that you can get at the pet store for dispensing liquid medicine to pets and some use eye droppers and count the drops. Both mean you have more to clean up which is why I eyeball in the first place!

So long folks!

Thanks for the nice welcome!
I've been reading fine scale for a long time and just now found this board.
I've been spending the last couple of hours just browsing.
Some amazing stuff here. While i built for years as a kid just for the fun i recently got started again and started to master the grown up techniques such as washes and pastel chalks (boy, those mig pigment applications look great).

Thanks for the link to dixieart - i can already see myself spending the next couple of paychecks and my wife is already rolling her eyes. My tanks just can't compete with a water color painting in her eyes.

I used an eye dropper for my first project and that was quite useless to be honest.
I only had one and getting the residue from the first color out took some time and some finely manicured q-tips. Glad to know i am not the only "eye baller" - i found it too to be pretty decent once you get the hang of it.

Thanks again.

Phil

I buy pipettes in packs of 50 from Ebay, they come with measuring tics on the side (too bad they aren't the least bit accurateBig Smile [:D]). Quite a deal, 50 for $8.

If you need to measure precisely, I found a syringe, like the ones at Walmart for giving medicine to babies, works well. I used it for a while.

Then I just gave up and eyeballed it. Wink [;)]

Syringe works pretty well for me.

What is "eyeball" guys.  Is it just to poor paint approximately from the jar?

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Eyeball verb to compare relative sizes using nothing more than vision itself.

Example: "Looks good enough to me"

Sometimes shares similar consequences as "Watch this!".

So long folks!
