Painting preparing for decals
Posted by morto on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 9:11 PM
It is suggested that decals adhere best if applied to a glossy surface.  I am working on a helicopter and in preparing the blades for decals I applied acrylic clear gloss to the spot of where the decal was to be placed.  The main surface is to be flat and when the gloss was applied, it left a mark.  I have airbrushed acrylic clear flat on the area but a slight hint of the glossiness still appears surrounding the decal.  Would appreciate any suggestions as to what I can do to remedy this situation and what would be the best method to pursue for the future.  Thanks.

I don't have any solution for the already applied decals but in the future, you should think of spraying the whole model with a clear gloss coat then apply the decals and then spray a clear flat coat for the finish.  That's how I proceed generally and it results in a very even surface.  Sometimes, the decals are so thick that it still showing a bump but I can't control that.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The next time I will apply a glossy coat first to the entire area and then proceed with the decaling.  Thanks again
