Botched the paint
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 25, 2003 3:58 PM
HELP.. I am working on my latest kit, a `70 429 Boss Mustang and I botched the body paint up pretty good. Well I didn't, my 2 year old son thought it would be pretty cool to pick up the piece while it was wet and see how well it would slide on it's roof across the carpet.Angry [:(!]Disapprove [V]Sad [:(]

The carpet I can fix. I have heard of soaking bad paint jobs in a tub of paint thinner. I tried this once a long time ago with bad results. Is there another way or better way?

Put on some rubber gloves and spray the paint with EZ-Off oven cleaner in the yellow can. Let it sit for an hour and scrub it with an old toothbrush. It works pretty good.
Someone posted a link on here once to a site that tested different products to remove paint and there was one product made for cleaning hands made by Castrol called Super Clean and I believe it worked better than anything else. Anyone have the link to that site?

I found this one which lists several products:

Does it matter what the paint base is? This was Testors Gloss Yellow in the little spray can. Enamel base.

Nope. I have used Easy-Off to remove Testors gloss paints myself.

Just remember to wear rubber gloves and keep the kids away.
Easy-Off contains lye and is some nasty stuff.

Yep, I recommend Castrol Super Clean. It's biodegradable and doesn't stink things up like other chemicals, etc. It's still a pretty tough chemical so it's not like you can drink it or anything. Wear gloves and keep it all away from that little guy!!!The only thing I've found that CSC has a tough time with is the Tamiya Lacquer spray paints...especially black...

Thanks for your help guys. The body is sitting on a piece of cardboard in the garage (locked doors) covered with EZ Off in the yellow can as we speak. I will let you know how it comes out.

Also, while I am on the subject of paint.....any one have any luck with using Krylon spray enamels for plastic kits? I don't have anymore Testors yellow but I have a whole can of Krylon yellow. I need to repaint the car after I get it stripped and thought Krylon would work just as well. I have used Krylons in the past for mass painting interiors but never a body with doing all the buffing an polishing. Will it hold up?

I think the Krylon would work great as it isn't really any different than the Testors spray paints. They are all enamels or acrylics correct?
Give it a try, you may find a cheaper alternative in the Krylon paints. Big Smile [:D]

Hey Guys,

The EZ-Off worked like a charm. There were a couple spots I had to scrape but all in all I am impressed.
As far as the Krylon goes......I don't think I will have any problems. I am also a computer modder and use Krylon's to paint plastic bezels and never had a problem. I have already layed down the first re-coat of yellow and it looks alright so far.

Yep, I've used Krylon with no problems. Some people LOVE the stuff and use it all the time. If you're going to polish it, let it really dry thoroughly for several days (or longer). 1970 Boss 429... one of my favorites. Can't wait to hear about the finished product!!

The new paint job turned out great!! I am in the process of building a little corner of the web to show off the several works in my collection. Kind of like a little virtual car show. I will post a link to it in the next few days.

Thanks again guys for all your help on this. I must say I was pretty discouraged there for a minute.
