Question about my new Iwata HP-CS
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 1, 2003 3:10 PM
After many weeks researching and trying to decide on an airbrush for my aircraft modeling, I've finally decided on an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. I have no doubt that this airbrush will provide years of faithful service and some high quality aircraft finishes. I want to make SURE I maintain this airbrush and clean it properly. So if anyone out there owns this same airbrush, I would appreciate some cleaning and maintaining tips. First, is it a good idea to spray acrylics AND enamels through the same airbrush? I currently use enamels, but am thinking about going to acrylics just to test them. When using enamels, what method is used to clean them? Do they have to be completely disassembled every time? Do the Iwata airbrushes require a special thinner when cleaning them, or can regular paint thinner or mineral spirits be used? Has anyone shot Future through theirs with good results? Just a few questions before I get started using this airbrush. I haven't got it yet, but I ordered it last week from Dixieart. Hope to get it soon!

Fantastic choice. I found it had virtually no learning curve if it's not your first airbrush. Future works great through it and you don't need any special cleaners. You can also switch paint types as long as you clean it well. It's also easier to clean than any other airbrush I've owned.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about the Future, because I've heard it can clog an airbrush. I can't wait to get it and try it!!

Just make sure you clean it immediately after spraying.. Do not let Future dry in the airbrush!

Enjoy your new Eclipse. I really like mine.

First off, good choice, I use the HP-CS exclusively for my aircraft modeling. To answer your questions:
Q: First, is it a good idea to spray acrylics AND enamels through the same airbrush?
A:Sure as long as you clean the airbrush with the appropriate thinner for the media that has been sprayed; eg.. use Windex for Future and Acylics and mineral Spirits and Laquer Thinner for your solvent-based paints.
Q:When using enamels, what method is used to clean them? Do they have to be completely disassembled every time?
A:No, not with the Eclipses. I start by pouring mineral spirits in the cup and spray this through to flush the needle and nozzle. Next I brush the inside of the color cup and front of the nozzle with a thinner soaked q-tip, followed by a couple of eye-droppers of Laquer thinner and spray this out at about 30 psi...the pressure really cleans the nozzle and needle tip very well. When I am done for the day I will remove the needle and wipe it on a napkin moistened with Laquer thinner and lightly coat it with Iwata's "Super Lube" availabe through www.dixieart.com. And thats it! Clean as a baby's.....moving right along...
Q:Do the Iwata airbrushes require a special thinner when cleaning them, or can regular paint thinner or mineral spirits be used?
A: Yes regular mineral spirits and Laquer thinner is safe and effective.
Q: Has anyone shot Future through theirs with good results?
A: Yes, I shoot Future through my HP-CS regularly. The atomization of the spray is excellent and lays down a beautifull layer(s) of the Future.
I hope you will as happy with your Eclipse as I and other have been! Happy Modeling!

Thanks for the answers! I'm disappointed in Dixie, though. I ordered my Eclipse last Friday. I realize there was a delay shipping it because of the holiday, but I called them today and found out it's out of stock and they won't get anymore until Friday 9-5-03! I just wish they would have at least e-mailed me and let me know it was going to be late. Anyway, I can't wait to get it and use it!
