Airbrush using Tamiya flat acrylics
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 3, 2006 8:20 PM

Hi guys

I airbrushed a 1/6 figure using tamiya flat acrylics with about 20-40% tamiya acrylic thinner. The color is okay, but the texture on the model is kinda like sandpaper! It's coarse to the touch and are prone to have scratch marks if handled too hard.

I have a bottle of Future, I was wondering if you can use future to smoothen the painted surface as well to protect it? I once used tamiya German grey to paint a tank, and just by rotating the turret, the paint gets chipped off on the hull, so how can I protect the paint?

 Thank you!

Tons of posts around here regarding adhesion of acrylics.  Try searching for "Acrylic" and "Adhesion" and you should get plenty of hits.

Your best bet is to prime the surface with either enamel or lacquer prior to sirbrushing the acrylic.  That will dramatically increase the adhesion.

Regarding the rough finish, the paint is partially drying in the air between the airbrush and surface.  Try spraying closer to the surface at lower pressure, and I'd also recommend adding a couple of drops of acrylic retarder to your paint to prevent it from drying so quickly.
