New Airbrush. Any suggestions
Posted by Mist086 on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 9:14 AM

I'm gonna get a new airbrush on Feb 1st and am now starting the search phase.  I am needing some input from you fine folks here.  I have now the Testors Aztec double action internal airbrush w/ the testors compressor.  It was a good starting airbrush, but now that i am getting proficent with it, it's time for a top-o-line model.  I want one that has good coverage, but want to start doing fine lines.  Also it is important that it cleans easy.  I am looking at Iwata's and Badger's but don't really know the differences between them.  Which one is better than the other?  Or do ya'll have one's you use that you think are better.  Please help so i can make a good decision when the time comes.  I plan on having this new one for a looonnggggg time.

Badger is not better than Iwata or vice versa, it is all a matter of preference.

I would suggest the Badger 100LG or the Omni 4000 gravity-feed airbrushes as they are excellent and you won't find better customer service anywhere.

Ok.  Here's what i'm looking at for my new airbrush.  Let me know if there are anything special about any of them.

Badger 100LG
Omni 4000
Iwata HP-C PLUS High Performance
Iwata Revolution-CR
Iwata Eclipse HP-CS

Badger 100LG - Excellent all around airbrush and a good value.

Omni 4000 - Also excellent although the 100LG with a fine needle/tip can spray slightly finer

Iwata HP-C Plus HP - Waste of money unless you are going to do automotive airbrushing

Revolution - Also a good airbrush and a good price

Eclipse HP-CS -  a very good airbrush in the same league with the Badger 100LG although more expensive for the airbrush and parts.

Thanks Mike.  That's exactly what i was looking for.  I want an airbrush that will do models, but also murals on Drums, Walls, and the such.  My twin boys want Spiderman and other superheroes on their bedroom wall.  So an airbrush would save me a lot of time.  So i just might get that HP-C

In capable hands ANY of the airbrushes you mentioned would work.

I have seen guys use a Paasche VL and do intricate murals.

It is NOT the airbrush but the skill of the user behind it!

I would use a siphon-feed airbrush for wall murals.

I painted these all with a Vega 2000 and a medium tip/needle years ago:

To jump in here, I too am getting ready to order a 100LG airbrush and wondered whether I should get the fine or medium tip? I do mostly armor and WWII aircraft and am looking for a brush to replace my ancient Paache single action.  I spray mostly acrylics but also plan to start shooting Alclad through the new brush. Any advice appreciated!

Dennis,

The medium tip/needle combo is the best overall.

Thanks Shellback.

I wish I had the motivation to paint like that again.

I might get pretty good. ;-)

Thanks Mike! I knew you'd be able to answer this question for me. I'll be ordering a new 100LG with medium tip today!

get a spare needle with it if you are getting the AB from dixieart.com, too.  saves on the shipping and any possible downtime in the future.

And some Regdab or Medea Super Lube for lubricating the needle and trigger, as well as preventing dry tip problems.

You'll like the 100LG!

So long folks!
