Enamal wash over oils
Posted by vtrockin on Thursday, December 14, 2006 9:06 AM
I've been using acrylics and oils w/turpenoid pretty exclusively. I was wondering whether an enamal wash w/mineral spirits will affect dried oil paint? Rather find out now than experimenting on my almost finished model. thanks

Yes, it will. Enamels and oils use compatible solvents, and oils are more susceptible to redesolving than enamels. You'd be better off using an acrylic wash over oils or enamels, or putting down a barrier coat of clear acrylic.

You can do oil over oil, enamel over enamel, and acrylic over acrylic washes—but the technique is different, as are the effects.
