The only thinner you would need to be carful with is laqure thinner. In fact i  my self would not use it with any plastic airbrush ive seen first hand what that stuff can do my father used to own a few body shops and i played around alot with lauqure thinner, so be careful.
Rob I think i can I think i can

Shellback said it right.  Practice and experience.  When I mix, I pull a little of the paint on the side of the AB bowl because I never remember how thick milk is.  If the paint goes back in the bowl well, then I'm ready.  You'll know if it is too thick.  If the AB doesn't spray well, doesn't spray or sputters then you'll know.  I'm sure we all know.

If I understand your question correctly:

Reduce paints to spraying viscosity with thinner. For many paints, the ratio of thinner to paint is approximately 1:1. This does vary quite a bit, however.

The very general rule is to get the consistency of 2% milk.

You have to experiment and practice, practice, practice!
