Ok, the major difference between acrylics and enamels is chemical composition. Enamels are oil Based, and acrylics are water or alcohol based. With these differences comes different characteristics. Enamels take longer to dry, and generally level out a little easier. The only downside is the odor and toxicity. Enamels are thinned with either the manufacturers thinner (model master) or mineral spirits (paint thinner).

Acrylics dry much faster, and they are safer and smell less. Again, use the recommended thinner (like Tamiya thinner) or distilled water. Also, you can use Isopropyl alcohol.

Generally, mix all paints to a milk like consistensy. Usually about 30% thinner is what I use.

Dear all modellers,

I'm a very beginner to modelling. I would like to paint a tank model. however, I don't know the difference between enamel and acrylics. What do I need to mix them with (Thinner, water, or what). And what's the ratio of mixing these? help me please.

thanks for you help
