waiting between gloss coats
Posted by echolmberg on Monday, January 22, 2007 8:44 AM

Hi everyone!

I'm working on the Hobbycraft 1/48 F8 Bearcat "Beetle Bomb".  It's gloss yellow but the first thing I wanted to do was give it a gloss white undercoat first so the yellow top coat is nice and bright.  I've heard about how some people, in order to get a smooth glossy finish, will apply a couple of light mist coats and then apply a heavier wet coat in the end.  I never hear them talk about how much time they wait between coats.  Could someone shed some light on this?  Do I need to wait 24 hours between each coat in order for the carrier to evaporate or do I only let about 15 minutes go by between coats so that each coat is a little wet?

Thank you for your help!

Just an idea, but why not use a flat white coat first? It definitely dry a lot faster, and your top yellow coat wil be just as glossy.

Because I hadn't thought of that!  LOL!  But here's a thought: Should one still apply the light mist coats first even though it would be flat or is that a method reserved just for gloss paints?

Thanks to all who help!

I would apply light mist coat first in general, be it flat or glossy. It just gives me more control and minimize the chance of overspraying. The final glossy coat is a bit of an exception as it does give you a higer gloss. I can always add another coat, but taking out too much paint, well.....

Gotcha.  Thanks for the great advice.  Tonight I shall paint.

Thank you again!

PS.  My digital camera is in the repair shop with a broken battery clip (don't worry, it's a free fix).  When I get it back in 2-3 weeks I'll post pictures.  :)  I always like posting pics of the planes I worked on where the community helped me out.  It's my way of saying "Thank you" to all who gave advice and tips and it shows the end result of everyone's help.
