UK People in need of Ammonia!
Posted by dublove on Monday, February 12, 2007 5:38 PM

Well I always thought 'Windolene' never seemed to affect Future. Since I've started using Future more and more I've proved it.

UK Windolene is just some alcohol and perfume in a bottle basically.

Anyhow. I have found a source that's nice and cheap:

Postage cost more than the product though but still, under a fiver.

Now If someone knows a UK product containing '2-Butoxyethanol' (Think Castrol Super Clean) that would be fantastic. :)

Not sure of your fascination with the stuff, or what you want it for, but 2-butoxyethanol, also called Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether or EGBE, can be found in all kinds of household cleaning detergents, particularly those that claim to cut through grease.  I honestly don't know any UK brands, but here across the pond, EGBE can be found in detergents that have brand names such as "Spray Nine", "Simple Green", "LA's Awesome", "409", and a whole dump truck full of others.  EGBE is normally found in concentrations of only 1%-5% by volume in most detergent formulas, so I don't think it's the EGBE by itself that is working for you, but rather some of the surfactants and other components (such as some other polyethoxyethanols) that are in the product in greater percentages. Nonylphenolypolyethoxyethanol is one that comes to mind.

Ah-ha interesting. I've been looking at this site that lists products ingredients but its US based. I didn't realise 2-butoxyethanol was Ethylene glycol mono-butyl! That helps though. DOT4 brake fluid is one I know of but it is a pita to work with :)

Problem is this Damn European Union - one example being Cellulose paint is being made illegal in tin form to the public but aerosols are of no concern. I wonder what one releases more of those lovely voc's into the atmosphere lol.

i too am interested in what works with future, and this ammonia mystery? not sure what the question is. styrenes descrip of the 1,2 monobutylwhatsis is the type of info i like. being a former hazmat specialist, i used a software package from EPA called "CAMEO Computer Aided Management for Emergency Operations, a component of which is a chemical library similar to commerical ones like MSDS but free to firefigheters etc. it has an associated but not integrated program called REACT which allows you to pick 2 chemicals and get a rough idea of what happens when they get together, this part i believe is open to the public. if you google epa, hazmat, noaa you should be able to find it and download.

personally i'm looking for a way to remove old enamel from styrene. all i have tested so far is denatured alcohol and it doesn't faze it. a true stripper like we had in the bad old days would melt the plastic, so i'm wondering if there is something new and magical available. i''ll watch with interest for any reply, onward into the styrene sky

Castrol Super-Clean works really well.  If that doesn't pull it, Easy-Off oven cleaner will work quite well.  Working with the oven cleaner, though, requires some additional precautions like a well-ventilated are (outdoors preferably), rubber gloves and eye protection.  Come to think of it, any time paint removal or cleaning is accomplished, proper eye and skin protection should be worn...
