Hi Zlee

apparently there is a chemical interaction that happens between Tamiya and poster putty. Now, I wont swear as to which poster putty, I have used several colors from wally world over the past couple of years, but in each instance, when putting it OVER Tamiya acrylic it eats the paint.  Im not a chemist so I will only guess at what the interaction is.  Either way, it is a bad combination.

For canopies I use tamiya tape rubbed down with a dull pencil and cut very slowly and very carefully with a brand new knife blade and no pressure. Seal with a VERY light coat of Future sprayed on or very carefully hand brushed on just to prevernt your bleed.

David,

I read this right before I was going to use poster puty to mask a canopy, to paint it withy Tamiya. What is the problem? I've never done it before. I am on my 3rd replacement canopy (the folks at Sevens are sooooo nice). I have tried to mask it with blue tape, frisket, and Parafilm M. The paint bled every time. The masking is very complicated. I was hoping the putty would be the answer.

hi prowannab

I thought I would send a PM instead of continuing the Gundams in the thread.

I like the Master Grade kits, but the newer 1/144 HGUC (High Grade Universal Century, you will learn the terms with time and experience) are very nicely detailed kits with well over a hundred crisply molded parts.

One of the best sites on the nets for all things Gundam is www.fichtenfoo.com , he has incredible tutorials and is simply an incredible builder.

I only buy Master Grade kits now, and will get a Perfect Grade one of these years! :-)

I swear by Tamiya tape. It's thinn, kinda expensive (compaired to regular tape) but i'd pay 3x as much if i had to. It also comes in a lot of different widths (wide for coverage, narrow for hard curves).

I only use the painters tape when i have a LOT of area i want covered. Be warned the longer you leave it on the more [insert term] is left behind (less with the tamiya stuff form what i have seen).

Prowannab

Poster putty is exactly that, common cheap sticky putty that I buy at walmart in the pencils and pens aisle that you stick posters up with.  I keep a big blob of this stuff on my desk, both build boxes, both paint boxes, my trays and on my computer at all times.  I use it to stick model parts to bamboo skewers to paint, lay it on as a soft mask for camo  and honestly I keep coming up with uses for it (like plugging holes in the bottom of some planes before painting, sticking weight into vinyl figures, putting resin figures together to figure out how they will fit, etc etc etc.)

It comes in colors and price ranges....you should be paying around a dollar to a dollar and a half for this stuff. The color I have right now in front of me is yellow HandiTAK from wally world, but I find the white stuff seems to work a bit better. I have also used some blue stuff that is also sold in the hobby shops for more money, that is called BluTak. Anyway , when you get the stuff , stretch it out and really knead it immediatly before use. It will get warm and stickier by doing this. Dont apply over Tamiya paint, it WILL eat it!  You can roll it into a worm and apply it where you want soft edge camo to go: keep your paint spray perfectly perpendicular to the surface and keep your pressure low. This is an old masking technique and works well if done correctly.

Otherwise experiment and play with it. It does eventually become contaminiated but you will be very surprised that once you overspray with whatever color paint, and you reclaim it and knead it again, all that paint color seems to just "dissappear"!

This should help, it's my Kempfer stuck to skewers ready to paint with each piece held on with poster putty.

most of the store brand or lower quality masking tapes are not suitable for our hobby use.

last week at our club meeting, masking was the topic, where everone brought thier favorites.  The now common 3M blue tape is a good general purpose tape that leaves very little residue. I prefer Tamiya masking tape, adn one person brought in a roll of automotive masking tape that was plastic-y and is not affected by Lacquer thinner.   I also use a lot of poster putty in my masking duties (except over Tamiya acrylics, that is a bad combination).   It is quite rare that I will use any brand of regular common, off white masking tape nowadays.

i went to the hardware store with my grandpa to fix his toilet and since i was there i decided to get some masking tape.well i bought the store brand stuff and it's totally worthless.if you ever go into a ACE HARDWARE store and decide to buy some tape ."don't buy their stuff" .this Censored [censored]won't stick to anything but itself except in the rare instance you want it to,and them by some magical occurance it decides not to even do that.so save yourselves alot of time and pain and stay away from ace hardware masking tape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
