I've seen and tried a yellow ochre wash on dark colors. Brings out the panel lines and gives the finish an oxidized/rust look to it. Also, you could 'chip' the panel lines in key spots to accent the major panels without overdoing it. And last, you could apply a light pastel rub to large panel areas to give a faded effect.

Were those planes painted in a gloss, because if they were, I would be under the impression that the paint would loose its luster before it started to fade. So, I guess my question is would pre-shading work on a glossy finish?

This is an interesting question because I'll be facing the same dilema with a Hellcat.

I was thinking of doing some preshading with an offwhite to lighten the center of each panel or maybe painting one or two panels an off-shade of blue to make it look like the panel had been replaced or repainted.  And then a light wash of light grey in the panel lines to make it look like some saltwater buildup.

But I'd be open to suggestions from people have done this in the past.

Painting Aircraft With a Single Dark Color

Next on my "to do list" is a 1:48 Tiger Cat. The instructions call for the entire plane to be painted Dark Sea Blue. How do you make the finished product visually interesting when it is all one dark color!? I have seen posts about using various shades of dark gray / black to paint all black aircraft, but what about Dark Blue? I will be breaking out my old reliable Paasche Single Action Airbrush for this one. Does anyone have experience with single dark color finishes? I haven't decided if I am going to use Enamels or Acrylics yet. Which one would work best in this situation? Any and all comments are greatly appreciated!
