what is MM anthracite gray metallic #2711?

i found this color at the LHS and it looked like a nice color to give machine parts. radiators, fans, fuel tanks, etc etc. had a sort of gray metallic under heat look. but when i applied it, it came out a light brown thinish color with metallic color in it. the color chart looked nothing like this. should i apply this after a base coat? and has anyone ever hear of this color?

Hi Rooster,
Seems the number is one of the Model Master enamel Car colour range.
My first thought if you ended up with a funny shade, is it needed a real good mixing.
Many enamels are like that, I use a little Badger battery mixer.

thamks viper. i was using the color chart off the way when i bought it, and like i said, it had a nice metal look to it like a motor would. after using it, it was really thin, and looks more like tamiya smoke with hints of metallic in it. i'll have to try shaking it for a long time and find out how to use it. maybe better with an airbrush. thanks for the info

The problem is the fact that the color chart uses inks to depict the color of the paint.  And inks (and moniters on your computor) quite often don't match the paint they are supposed to represent (different pigments, carriers etc).  Some paint manufacturers will often put a disclaimer on a printed color chart to this effect.  The only way to get a true match is to use a color chip made using the paint (if you get a copy of FS 595, all the colors in it are painted, not printed)
