There should be a sight glass on the side of the compressor housing. Typically this is viewable through the small opening in the side of the case in a suitcase type housing with handle on top such as the 20A. You fill it to the middle of the sight glass. How much oil it consumes is dependent on a number of things like the number of hours on the compressor (wear). Look up the manual for similar compressors and that should give you an idea for the quantity of oil it takes to fill and the recommended frequency on changing it. Remember to always use a good air/oil separator on the outlet if it's an old compressor and if it doesn't have one already. Nothing like specks of oil mixed into the paint to ruin a good finish.

How much oil do you have to add to a silent compressor?  How much does it use in say a year's time?

Machine oil may very well destroy the air compressor. The oils for silent air compressors are formulated for resistance to foaming and are designed to absorb some moisture. The one picture I found on the internet of your air compressor looks much like the Silentaire Super Silent 20A. I would recommend getting the same oil if no specific info can be obtained for your compressor. A quick search will lead you to many suppliers of the oil including: http://www.dixieart.com/CompressorsMain.html . Hope this helps,

Have just bought a silent compressor at last but am unsure what type of oil to use, the instructions are vague and as it is second hand I am a bit lost. I imagine machine oil is what I need but need some help.

The compressor is an aerograph 20A
