Question about painting?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 23, 2007 2:37 PM

Hello, I am new to the forum.

Can acrylic be painted over enamel? I am working on a #42 Kyle Petty Melow Yellow Pontiac, I plan on spray painting the body gloss black and need to put a neon green stripe across the bottom of the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

TIM

Yes, provided that the enamel is completely cured. Cured is different from dried. Curing takes longer. I would wait at least 48 hours between colors, especially as you are painting over gloss.

There is a chance that you will have a problem with adhesion or crawling (alligator skin pattern) if the enamel has a silicone gloss additive. If that happens, remove the acrylic with Windex or Simple Green, wipe the area with 90 percent isopropyl or denatured alcohol (ethyl works, too) and repaint.

Or you can just wipe the area with alcohol the first time.…Sign - Dots [#dots]
