Metho?? Can someone translate for this newbie to the airbrush world?

"Metho" is short for "Methylated Spirits" in Australia (and aka "Meths" in the UK), which I believe is roughly analagous to denatured alcohol. Essentially it's Ethyl alcohol blended with Methyl alcohol and other additives to render it undrinkable.

Ah thanks for explaining, I will have to pick up some of that, just read a few paragraphs from a "tutorial" which said that it works well for cleaning airbrush parts, etc.. I am guessing you dont use it to "thin" the paint though right?

If you're just using Tamiya acrylics in your AB, metho is fine. Not to say Tamiya thinner is any better or worse, but metho at $3 per litre is much preferable to Tamiya thinner at $3 per 10mls.

Generally, when changing clours, I'll run water through it till it runs clean to flush it out, then run some metho through it.  End of session, as above, then unscrew the head and soak it in a paint jar of metho. Wipe it down and then reassemble and it should be good to go.

Airbrush Cleaning Question.
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 16, 2007 9:48 PM

Hi, I just upgraded from a $30 cheapy to a $185 Passche VL DA, and of course I want to take excellent care of it and make it last.

I'm got a few questions about cleaning.

Whats the best method of cleaning?

How do I clean the needle?

Is tamiya thinner ok to use to clean? or should I use Metho (thats what the guy at the show recommended?

 Thanks in advance.!
