Help, I need a new airbrush!!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 3:47 PM

I currently have a Paasche single action airbrush, and a badger compressor. I am returning to modeling after a 7 year break. I build mostly AFV's and paint with mostly acrylic paint. I would like to replace my airbrush. Money is an object. I would like any advice that can save me some future headaches. I had been thinking about getting the Azteck Deluxe.

I second the Iwata Revolution. That's my first airbrush and it works great.

Out of curiosity, why switch?  I only raise the question because you stated that money is an object, but did not indicate that your Paasche was broken, so I am assuming that it still works.  I have a single action Paasche H (oddly enough a Badger compressor as well), and it is more than capable for dealing with any armor airbrushing requirements.  Properly used, it puts down a fine coat of paint and can make fine enough lines to do freehand camo in 1/72, so 1/35 or 1/48 is a cinch.

This combo here is going for $70.00 at Harbor Tool until June 25th, then it reverts to its normal list price of $100.00:

I got one, and it works very nicely.

And with Harbor Tool, for no extra cost, all you gotta do is hang on to your receipt, and you can get all the replacement parts you want in the first year for free.

Harbour Freight also sells just the airbrush that is in the kit posted by T_Terrific for $19.99.

They also have this kit for $129.99. The airbrushes look like a Badger 150. They had only 1 left at my local store.

That is the model 1500, I believe. I got two of them (sure enough, I am using one for spare parts), as well as three of their single-action models that are going for $3.99.

The only problem with them (not the model that comes with the compressor, as it's air fitting is made differnetly) is that the tiny brass sleeve that holds the air-valve's pressure spring in will eventually back out and you cannot find it, since it is so tiny. To fix that, I apply Loctite's Theadlocker to it's threads when it backs out a little, and it works fine.

I have had the air brush for the last 15+yrs and it is showing its age. Thats why the need for the change. I am toying with the idea of switching to a double action.

I've been using a Paashe H AB for 20 years.  No real problems & I use it a lot.  Had to replace the #3 tip & needle assembly a few years ago, but that was cheaper than an all new AB.  I also have an Iwata CR Revolution AB & I agree it's a very nice Double Action AB.

Even if you get a double action brush, keep the H.  That's a very good airbrush that is often overlooked.

I have a similar compressor from harbor freight(same company I belive, the compressor is a central pnuematic) and it's pretty good, except for the regulator which to be quite honest is almost useless.  The airbrush I bought is a model maker double action.  It's actually very nice and works very well.  I'm somewhat inexperienced with using an airbrushed, but this thing is so easy it's not funny.  It retails pretty cheap too.  Well under the 100 dollar mark.  Mine is a siphon feed, I would have preferred a gravity feed due to my experience with siphon feeds but this one works surprisingly well.  My only reason really for wanting a gravity feed is for lower pressure airbrushing.  I can go lower with gravity feed.  I think once I get a decent regulator though this will work fine.

I've used the Iwata Eclipse for several years now with no problems...it is a very nice, reasonably priced, general purpose airbrush. Easy to clean, easy to use. I won't get into comparisons with other brands, because I've only used the Iwata, but that's where my vote would go.
