mm metalizer non buffing vs alcad???
Posted by Flyingcoach2 on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 8:39 PM
I am looking for an honest opinion....which would be easier to use?  I have never used either of them.  I am looking for a GREAT nmf on a F86 and the only way i have ever sprayed alum is with a rattle can.  I want to try something different this time.  I know that the alcad needs a good gloss black basecote.  Does the mm?  Thanks for the info.

I have used everything on the market that I can get here in the US.  I will take the old large bottles of alclad any day of the week over anything produced now. Too bad its not made anymore, but for the next in line, it would be the new formula Alclad in the smaller bottles.  Its tough enough to stand up to masking with a safe release tape. I have had horriffic results with all of the acrylic mettalics, and fair to middling results with all of the buffing and non buffing metallizers. If you prepare youre surface properly SNJ with polishing powder is good, and makes  agreat chrome effect over gloss black enamel, plus the liquid can be tinted with  gloss enamels. But, for what all I do now, it's Alclad over a gloss black acrylic base; I rarely reach for MM unless it is burnt metal or titanium.

Now, with all this being said, you need to realize that a good NMF finish is 99.5% prep work on the plastic. There have been many articles in FSM magazine (going back to '86 with the B36 on the cover) and dozens of articles online, so I won't recount that here. NMF starts with the investment of proper prep and finishes with solid application of a good product :-)

Flyingcoach

where by chanced did you stop in ? If it was IslandHobbies they should befully knowledgeable, unless you got that kid with the purple hair and his skateboard behind the counter that the other guy keeps tripping over....then he probably has no clue.

I find a LOT of non-modelers working LHS's these days.......

NO...Hobby Island went out of bus. on March 2nd Boohoo [BH] I loved going to HI.  Was great staff, could answer any questions if not, they would find answer for you next time you came in.

Had to go to M&M and RC Hobbyland to find stuff..... staff was less than knowledgable.  Since this occured......I have been checking out the online retailers heavily.

MM non buffing metalizer comes out without shine, it can be buffed a little with a soft cotton cloth to make it smoother but without a sheen. If you want shine you need to use buffing metalizer and elbo grease.

Alclad II shades are high shine to low shine it depends on what you use.

Man I had totally forgotten about that article, that was one of the most exhaustive comparisons I had ever seen on NMF finishes!

Thanks for posting that one up!

There is always the Bare Metal Foil alternative. I'm probably going to go that route for the Williams Bros. Lockheed 10-E I am going to build someday ... but I also have a rattle can of Model Master non-buffing aluminum Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]
