Tamiya Acylics.. Whats the paint/thinners ratio?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, July 15, 2007 1:33 PM

Hi there, can any of you 'old hands' tell me what the ratio of paint to thinners is for Tamiyas' acryllics is when you airbrush? I've just bought a 'starter' spraygun and although the thinner bottle has instructions on it, my Japanese ain't too good!

Hope you can help a spraying novice, Hotdobbyroids

Thin to the consistancy of cream. They really don't need that much, so don't overdo it. I have always used plain rubbing alcohol and have had no problems. Test spray on something else before your model, just to check how its coming out. Hope that helps.

I find cream a bit thick and thin to the consistency of milk. Plain rubbing alcohol works as that is basically what the Tamiya thinner is, but be careful of "Tip Dry" where the paint dries so fast it clogs the airbrush. The brand name thinner has acrylic retarders added, and you can buy the same at art stores like Michael's. It just takes a drop or two per use.

If you do go the alcohol route, I would buy the 90+% version of Isopropyl over the 70% Rubbing, as there is no documentation what the 30% "other" is made up off. It can end up being a substance that can cause the paint to do some pretty wierd stuff.

A good material to test and practice on is plastic milk jugs. Lots of compound curves and it reacts the same way styrene does to paint.

So long folks!

Once again, Bill beat me to it…Zzz [zzz]

Only thing I might disagree with is the milk jug thing. Never could get that to work for me…Confused [%-)]

I'm usually thinning 1 part thinner to 2 part paint, and it works quite good.
Beginner and proud of it!

I vary the amount of thinner depending on what I'm trying to do.

Generally for most air brush jobs, my ratio will be 25 to 35% Tamiya Thinner to paint.  If I'm spraying a very light dust coat, it will be 80 to 90% thinner to paint.

Thankyou all,

must say I'm impressed at such quick responses. Restores you faith in your fellow man somewhat!! Ithink the 2:1 ratio of paint/thinners is the way to go as I have a large area to cover. Will try it out tomorrow morning. Will keep you posted on the outcome (may go bald with trying I expect)!!

Once again, many thanks, HotdobbyroidsBig Smile [:D]
