Model Master Acrylic Thinner
Posted by bobbaily on Sunday, August 12, 2007 6:36 PM

I tried spraying some MM acrylic directly out of the bottle (no thinner) and had a terrible time with paint drying on the tip of the needle.  I've used MM acrylic with MM acrylic thinner in the past and not had so much of a problem.  My question is-Does anyone know if MM acrylic thinner contains a (drying) retardant?  Or is there good retardant that I can add in?

Thanks

MM acrylic is pretty thin but I still thin it. Sometimes as much as 50/50. As far as I know, MM acrylic thinner does not contain a retardent but will make the paint AB better. I use alcohol to thin with and use Liquitex brand slo-dri acrylic retardent when I AB. These two products are far more cheaper in the long run than using MM acrylic thinner which runs me 5 to 6 dollars for a small bottle. Hope this helps....

Thanks Andy.  Where do you purchase your Liquitex-LHS, chain store (i.e., Hobby Lobby)?  And what type alcohol do you use-70%, 90%?  And what ratio retardent to alcohol?

Sorry for all the questions but I've been fighting the airbrush lately and it keeps winning.

Get the 91% alcohol (sold at walmart). I use MM acrylics also for ABing and have had this problem thinning with alcohol.

You can get the Liquitex at Hobby Lobby or any painting supply store. I use the 70% alcohol for thinning. My ratio is something like this:

60% paint - 30% alcohol- 10% retardent

Keep in mind. You don't always have to use retardent. The only time I use it is when I will have the AB in use for a while with a complicated paint scheme or freehanding something. If you are just laying down primers or single finish coats, just thinning with alcohol should do you.

Thanks Andy.  Will pick up some Liquitex Slow Dri (the blending fluid, not the gel, right?) and try that approach.
