We just covered this in a recent thread.

Any clear coat applied over a flat paint will make the color appear darker. Applying a flat coat over a clear gloss will not lighten the color to match the adjacent area. This is because the coating is deeper where both the gloss and flat are present, resulting in more internal reflection and refraction in that area.

To avoid this, gloss coat the entire surface, apply decals, then apply a full coverage clear flat.

An interesting technique is to gloss coat only the panels where the decals occur, which serves to differentially weather the panels.

dark patches after dullcoteing
Posted by Ant on Monday, August 13, 2007 11:41 PM

i glosscote before decaling, only the sections needed, and i am finding that when i dullcote i have darker patches where i have used the gloss.

is this because A.im using to much gloss  B. not glossing the whole kit c. not using enough dullcote.

i have found i use a fair bit off gloss to get the shine up but use mist coates for the dull. i must admit i never had a problem when i used to just apply the decals without gloss, risky i know but they seemed to adhear fine.

not sure so all suggestions are welcome.
