Spraying Model Master SemiGloss Question
Posted by djrost_2000 on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 11:35 AM

I usually spray my lacquers from a can, but noticed that Testors does not produce Semi Gloss in a can anymore.  I bought a bottle and I see that I need to thin it with lacquer thinner to spray from an airbrush.

Can anyone tell me what the right ratio is for airbrush thinning?

To clean the airbrush, do you just run plenty of lacqeur thinner through it?

Thanks,

I am to assume you are using emamel paint?  I would use Testers paint thinner. I would then mix the paint at about 20% thinner and 80% paint. Mix well. Check the paint, it should have the consistancy of milk. Add more thinner if needed. Try spraying some and see if it coats well and lays on smooth. If it is too flat or even rough, you might have too much thinner and it is drying before it gets to the surface. To clean, pour out the paint, wipe the cup/ jar clean and spray about half a cup/ jar of airbrush cleaner through it. When done with the paint session shoot about half a cup/ jar of lacquer thinner through it and then do a normal cleaning of your airbrush.

If you are using a true lacquer paint then you will need to get additional advice. The automotive guys have lacquer thinner and lacquer reducer.

Hi DJ

I use the MM lacquers all the time... gloss befroe decals and weathering and flat at the end or semi-gloss when called for .  My lacquer/thinner mix is about 60/40 to 50/50.  I spray over MM enamels without any problems at all.  Save some money nad get medium dry lacquer thinner at HomeDepot, Lowe's etc.

Thanks for the replies.  I may order the Model Master lacquer thinner as going to Home Depot would be quite a trip.  Special thanks for the thinning ratios!

Dave... go to a local paint store, hardware store, Wal Mart or K-Mart.  MM lacquer thinner works out to something like $250 a gallon.  A gallon at Lowe's or HD should be about $14 and maybe a bit more at the other places.
