That gives me an idea on amount.  As for the colors, I see what you mean about the brown.  I will search for another color or just mix as suggested in the instructions.  As for the Sky, Tamiya's looks to greenish, but that could be my screen.  As long as i am in the ball park on this one.  This is more for practice than for show, but I don't want it to look ratty either.

It's difficult to estimate how much paint you're going to need - this will vary depending on thinning ratios,  the number of coats applied, coverage required for a particular colour and individual painting techniques. In my personal experience, I would guesstimate that I could do at least 2 or 3 1/48th Spitfire sized models with one (10ml) bottle of Tamiya paint.

As for your colour selections, the Dark Green is in the ballpark, but Red Brown is way too dark and red. The brown colour is actually "Dark Earth", which isn't available "straight out of the bottle" if you are using Tamiya paints.

Here's an example:

Newbie Paint Questions?

After 30 or so years away from the hobby, I am aboutt o begin my first project - a 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire MK.I.  Looks like a pretty simple build with enough hard parts to teach me a few lessons. But I have a few questions

1. How much paint do I use?   Say I was going to airbrush my Spitfire with a coat of paint to lay down the first camo color, how much should I mix?  Those bottles are small and I have no idea how much to mix.  2 drops, the whole bottle or somewhere in between?  I get thinning it like 2% milk and all that.

2. This is kind of specific to the Spitfire, but I have Tamiya's Dark Green and Red Brown (XF-61 and XF-64) for the camo as listed in FSM's charts on WWII colors.  They look way too dark when I tested them (though it was on a white background) and the instructions call for a mix of Tamiya Colors.  I am confused.  Are these colors accurate?  Should I go with a different color from another manufacturer (I'd rather not mix paint quite yet, baby steps).  I am having the same issue with the cockpit color but upon reading a little, it seems no one is really sure exactly what shade went into the cockpits and cockpit green looked close enough.

Other than practicing with the airbush, I guess thats all I need for now.  The forums have helped me a lot.  Thanks!
