I would strongly recommend NOT using a shop vac, even for Acrylics. At best the explosion would far enough away as to not harm you directly. At worst, dumping vaporized Alcohol (typical thinner for Acrylics) or any deriative of Ethanol (typical thinner for lacquers and enamels) into an enclosed space would likely result in a spectacular fireball, and get you nominated for a Darwin Award.

I recommend studing Spray Booth Design and adapting your booth so that it gives you years of safe use.

So long folks!

Shop Vac for Spray Booth Fan?
Posted by JButler on Thursday, August 30, 2007 10:57 AM

Hi,

I'm starting work on my homemade spray booth this weekend and I was wondering on the practicality/safety of using a shop vac as a fan.  I've read most of the spray booth posts on this site and I know that it certainly would not be certified explosion proof, but I use mainly acrylics.  However, once I get the airbrush going, I'm certainly going to be using Alclad and probably some enamels.  Also, the motor on the shop vac is located away from the actual booth.

Anyone out there use one on your booth?  How does it work?  I'm thinking of locating it on the bottom at the back of the booth.  Any suggestions on that?

Thanks for your help.
