Painting over Alclad II Aluminium?
Posted by Gigatron on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:21 PM

Hey gang,

I have a few questions regarding alclad's aluminum (regular, not polished).  I'll be painting invasions stripes over an aluminium NMF.  The stripes will be painted using tamiya acrylics.  Will the tamiya adhere ok to the alclad, or will it be runny (like spraying on bare plastic) or something else?

Also, I know future over alclad chrome really kills the shine.  What is the effect of future over non-high shine NMFs?  Will it make the aluminium look like flat grey or otherwise plasticy?

Thanks,

Fred

Nope, it will work just fine.  I've done it several times and have never had any problems.

I haven't had good luck with Future over metalizers.  I don't like the way the finish looks.  I can't really describe it but it just doesn't have that "Real Metal" look any longer to me.

Gigatron,

I recently purchased a CD video for learning to apply natural metal finishes entitled "Natural Metal Finishes - Featuring Alclad II with Floyed S. Werner, Jr.  The video features guidelines for applying the Alclad II products, parts prep, primming, masking, weathering, techniques for stripping chrome off and simulating aluminum, chrome and brass finishes.

One of the best purchases I have made in recent times concerning modeling. Thumbs Up [tup]  Well worth the price! My 2 cents [2c] The CD is available thru Squadron Mail Order.
