Tamiya A6M2 Zero-Paint help
Posted by ben1227 on Friday, October 19, 2007 6:11 PM
The colors they say to paint it are either AS-21 Dark Green or AS-29 Gray Green. But both of those are spray cans and they don't make the color in acrylic bottles I don't think. Can someone tell me if they make these colors in the little bottles and what the X/XF designation is, or the closest acrylic Gunze-Sangyo or other brand color #?

I've actually purchased the same kit about a month ago.  About two weeks ago I went to go buy some bottle paint for it and ran into the same situation.  I don't want spray cans.  I just now went to the Tamiya website and clicked on the contact us link and sent them an e-mail:

"I have purchased the A6M2 Zero and the colors to paint it are either AS-21 Dark Green or AS-29 Gray Green.  But both of those are spray cans and I haven't seen a corresponding acrylic bottle.  Can you tell me if Tamiya make these colors in the little bottles and what the X/XF designation is?"

I used mostly your wording.  They say answers can take up to 72 hours.  If they respond I'll send you the info.

Goodluck.

Went to my other forum and found a reference chart I remembered having seen a link for:

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_japan.htm

When you get there there are three sections to scroll through; Japanese army aircraft colors, Japanese navy aircraft colors, and Japanese miscellaneous colors.  It gives make/model number of several brands of paint.

The Tamiya matches are as follows:

AS-21 (Dark Green 2 (IJN))  = XF-70 (Dark Green 2 (IJN))

AS-29 (Gray Green) = XF-76 (Gray Green)

Thanks guys...Unfortunately, Squadron has barely any Tamiya paints in stock. I hear it's because they weren't putting enough safety information on it to satisfy certain states, particularly California. The usual "This product is known to the state of california to cause this, this, and this, and may also cause this."

Everything is known to the state of California to cause cancer, bith defects, or other reproductive harm.  Last year it was Tamiya glue, now it's Tamiya paint and Gunze products.  Try finding Mr. Surfacer 500 in the US.  There are plenty others.

Why Tamiya? They happen to make some of the best cements, puttys, and acrylic paints. The only good thing Squadron has in stock is their white liquid surface primer.

It's anything with lead in it that causes them to put that rediculous warning label on products here not just Tamiya products.

"Phil_H" (thank you) has already given us the answer but this is what Tamiya sent in response to the inquiry:

Dear Tamiya Customer,

Unfortunately Tamiya does not offer matching jar paints.  Please see
this

Thanks, but I can't believe Tamiya wasn't more helpful about it. The charts just show all their colors. XF-21 and XF-76 match the AS colors perfectely, and I would think they know that...
