First, all washes work best on a gloss surface.  I paint mostly with enamels, then gloss with Future, then apply an oil wash.  Regarding your questions:

1.  Really Depends on the base colors your putting the wash over, but the ones I find most useful are Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Paynes Gray, Ivory Black & Yellow Ochre.  Of these, the ones I use most in my work are Burnt Umber & Paynes Gray.

2.  I use either Mineral Spirits or Turpenoid.

3.  Same as #2, although Lacquer Thinner works well but is hard on the brushes.

4.  A lot longer than Acrylics.  Allow at least 24 hours dry time for an oil wash.

5.  You can go straight to a flat coat, once the oil wash has cured.

Regards,  Rick

Oil Wash Questions
Posted by MaxSheridan on Saturday, October 20, 2007 10:55 PM

Since I had a minor(read: major) mishap while doing an acrylic wash over acrylic paintBanged Head [banghead], I've decided to start doing oil washes. Since I've never tried an oil wash, I have a few questions.

1. What colors would be good to have as a "beginner set" for washing purposes?

2. What is recommended for thinning?

3. How about cleaning?

4. What is the average dry time for oils? Is it alot longer than that of acrylics?

5. Should you overcoat it with future, or can you go straight to the flat coat?

As far as the colors go, I would like to know the most often used colors, so I can pick them up all at once and cut down on the trips to HobLob. Thanks!Smile [:)]
