Best Acrylic Flat Coat
Posted by iflyprops on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 4:32 PM

I'm sure this has been asked before...

I'm shooting a mix of Tamiya and Gunze Aqueos with several coats of future over the paint. What is the best acrylic flat coat? I really want to stick with acrylic just because where i am painting, that and I hate minera spirits/lacquer thinner, lol.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Polly Scale flat or satin. By far and away, the easiest way to go.

My LHS doesn't stock Polly Scale, so I use Future mixed with Tamiya Flat Base. Ratio depending on degree of flatness required, desired or what mood I'm in.

So long folks!

Same here.

I too have an LHS that does not carry Polyscale, so I use the standby of Future/Tamiya Flat Base at a ratio of 4 parts Future to 1 part Flat Base.

Vallejo Matt acrylic coat for airbrush is, in my opinion, perfect - for airbrush, that is. If you prefer to use brush, Vallejo have a line of coats for it, too. Or the line of acrylic coats from the can, if you prefer it this way... Alltogether, Vallejo are the best acrylics I've used. :)

Pollyscale is pretty good, but it goes bad relatively fast, with time. At least flat coat can go bad and leave white spots on your paint. Online shops can jolly good sell a 5 years old paint to you, if they need to get rid of old stock - that's what happened to me, with the following catastrophy. :) Good thing it was just a small boat I've tried the coat on.

Haven't seen any bad vallejo paint as of yet, though, so I would advise it.
