Mig-25 Paint help
Posted by ben1227 on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 3:52 PM

I'm working on the Hasegawa Mig-25, and for the main sections of the fuselage it says to paint it 1+75, which means White & Dark Sea Gray. They give no ratio of white:dsg. Also, I'll be painting various parts of the plane that, not just the fuselage. How do I mix it correctly? I'll need to be able to store a working amount of that color in something, because I know if I mix it once and don't remember what the ratio was, I'll never get that exact color again.

It also calls for Silver + Burnt Iron

Flat Black + Neutral Gray

What brands of paint do you plan on using or do you have access to? The Soviets used a standard interceptor gray similar to light gull gray on many interceptor aircraft from that time perod. The Dilectric panels/radome were often a gray on those aircraft somewhere between neutral gray and gunship gray depending on their weathering. Check Testors and Xtracolor paint lines for specific Soviet colors that would work. Use your favorite metallic colors for the afterburners.

Do an image search on the MiG 25 to get a better idea of what you want to achieve. Be forewarned that Soviet color photos are often not the best reliable source for exact color matches, just a general guideline.

I have access to anything Squadron carries Big Smile [:D] Just no testors/model master. I have serious airbrush clogging problems with them. I very strongly prefer acrylic...Is there any way to get the colors without having to mix them myself, or do you know some exact brands, colors, and their names? I'll look for some pics to post next.

Some reccomendations for simlar shades in acrylics would be Gunze either aircraft gray 332 or barley gray 334 for the overall color, and dark sea gray 331 for the radome and dilectric panels. In Tamiya Sky gray xf-19 for the overall color and either neutral gray xf-53 or medium gray xf-20 for the radome, etc. Xtracolor makes the proper colors in their enamel line x612 and x627 but Squadron does not carry their product line. Again, these are just suggestions for similar colors that will be close. They certainly wont look wrong, especially when all the fadiong and weathering of Soviet aircraft is considered.

You may also want to look at White Ensigns line of enamels. Great Models carries thier line of paints. They make Modern Soviet colors along with a WHOLE LOT more.

Thanks so much for those suggestions, I'll either do Tamiya or Gunze... I'll post pics in the a/c section when I'm done.

EDIT: I won't be needing these colors anymore as my Mig is ruined Boohoo [BH] Modeling very late at night has it's tolls...I glued the vertical stabilizers on the underside (The slots looks the same as as the top!) Normally I would just freeze the whole model and snap the part off, but that's only when I use CA. I used Tenax, which of course welds it, so there's no chance now. But I have those colors and numbers written down on my paint charts for future reference for anymore Russian fighters I may build, so thanks again.
