Airbrushes Hate Me
Posted by yeti0010 on Thursday, November 22, 2007 8:17 PM

I am on my third in the past year.  my first lasted me a long time it was a badger 200, I then decided to try out a double action so I got a cheap one, when that broke a few months later I figured oh well it was cheap, then I invested in a badger 150,  It just suddenly stopped working today in the middle of a project, Air does not go through the tip, but the tip is clean and paint comes out in small blots rather then a fine spray.  This is driving me crazy.

Are you using a metal cup with that Badger 150 or a glass jar?

On the top of the jar lid there is a small hole.

Make sure that hole is clear or paint will not come out well.

No airflow from the tip is unusual. If it's a severe blockage at the tip, I might expect to see some blow-back or bubbles in your paint jar, though that's dependent on whether the blockage is inside the tip or outside..

If you're using acrylics, it may be a case of the dreaded "tip dry". Unscrew the tip from the head assembly and swab it out.

Another possibility is a blockage (eg. paint contamination) in your air valve. First, unscrew the tip from the head assembly and press the trigger. If a reasonable volume of air comes out, then it would suggest that the air valve is ok, but if little or no air comes out, it would suggest that the air valve itself is blocked.

I did try that and with the tip unscrewed plenty of air goes through.  but as soon as you add the tip, air no longer goes through.  I thought that it might be clogged so I tried the larg tip that came with it which I have never before used and at first it still did not work then only a little bit of air came out and the paint that come out came out in blots.

Ok...

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that you might have flared or otherwise damaged or deformed the paint nozzle. This could happen if you push the needle in too hard when reinserting the needle after cleaning.

If the nozzle is undamaged, it could also be that the paint nozzle has become loosened and is not fully seated in the head. If this is the case, it may be too far forward and may be forming a seal when you screw the tip on, blocking the airflow.

Your third airbrush in the past year? What do you do to the poor things?

My suggestions is to strip it down totally and thoroughly clean it. If it still doesn't work, then start looking for damaged or broken parts. If you can't find the problem, mail it to badger and they'll probably fix it for you. Ask MikeV what he thinks of Badger's customer service... Wink [;)]

Ok thanks, I will just dunk it in a bath of solvent and let it sit for a bit.  hopfully that will help free it up.
