Paintbooth
Posted by modlvr on Thursday, December 6, 2007 5:25 PM

Well after trying an airbrush for the first time it quickly became apartment that I needed a paint booth if I wasn't going to kill myself.

I didn't want to spend a ton of cash with Christmas coming so I elected to build one.

I am in a one bedroom apartment and really cramped for space between my office and hobby area.

Anyway I built this for under $50.00 out of an oven hood I got at Home Depot and a Plastic storage box I got a Wal-Mart.

If there are any children in the room send them out now. It is fairly grotesque Big Smile [:D]

I used it for the first time today. Geesh I just built it yesterday... and it worked great.

BTW I have put up a hobby site and started a blog on my first model build in over 35 years. Fell free to register and comment. I need all of the help I can get.

Looks good Andy, you'll find ways to tweak it as time and use occurs. As long as it works.

Andy, there's one more expense you need... BUY A RESPIRATOR! They're pretty cheap at the Home-improvement stores, and well worth what you'll spend! Mine's a 3M brand. That will take care of the fumes your spray booth doesnt get!

Your spray booth looks better than my original one... it was a box i made out of CHEAP plywood in my basement and an old fan with a furnace filter... lol

A word of caution! Basic vent hood and bathroom fans, such as those found at Home Depot, are not typically recommended for the removal of volatile fumes, and can ignite the vapors, causing loss of eyebrows, or much worse. You really should use a "shaded pole" fan/motor, these are available at www.grainger.com . Shaded pole motors (EDIT: most shaded pole motors with a squirrel cage setup) are isolated from contact with ignitable vapors.

Actually they are not guaranteed unless it specifically says, "Explosion proof" on the motor and those are very expensive.

Yes, Mike is quite right. Make certain it's rated as explosion proof. Expensive, yes. But it's even more expensive to go to the burn ward, so it's money well spent.

At the very least, a "squirrel cage" type arrangement (where the actual motor is not in the airflow stream) should greatly reduce the possibility of a spark ignition. These can be purchased quite a bit cheaper.

I agree Mark that a squirrel cage is really all you need.

The only way a paint booth is going to explode is if you have an accumulation of fumes which should never happen when the fan is going.

I am using Acrylics. Doesn't that cut down on the fumes also?

If you mean igniting then yes, unless you are using an airbrush cleaner that is flammable like 91% Iso alcohol.
