Tamiya paint news
Posted by usmc1371 on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 12:10 PM

Just a FYI here:

TAMIYA PAINT NEWS

Due to circumstances beyond Internet Hobbies' control, Tamiya recently switched paint manufacturers. They have been experiencing shortages on many of their paints. Out of stock situations on their paints should cease in the very near future. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

This from "Internet hobbies".  Alot of people have been complaining about the lack of Tamiya paints on their hobbyshop shelves.  I guess this is the reason.

This may also indicate that a change in formulation will occur. Proceed with caution, as the new paints may not be quite identical to the older ones in terms of behavior.

Oh Good Grief! As if I didn't have a hard enough time finding Tamiya Acrylics!

This is not good folks...this is not good at all.

And this may be wonderful news!

Don't read too much into such announcements. This could be a return to the "old" formula, which was superior to the current one. It could also mean that the Tamiya supply issue of the past few months goes away forever.

As Ross says, "proceed with caution". I'm going to choose to read that as "still proceed".

My LHS has been having shortages for months, and seems to finally be restocking the shelves. This may be old stock relabeled to salve the Californian's who find cancer causing agents in everything, or it may be the new formula, or it may be the old formula just made at a different plant.

So long folks!

What if it's worse than the current version?

Then I go to the LHS and buy up as much of the old stock as I can, and start lobbying him to carry the Vallejo lineup!

So long folks!

Do you like the Model Color paints Bill?

The HobbyTown USA here has a huge assortment of them.

I haven't tried them yet, but people I know and respect swear by them, and not at them.

It seems like their most popular colors like XF-1 were out of stock for quite some time.  Some of the LHSs here in southern California were out the last couple months, but I just picked some up at the local Hobby People in LA.  They apparently got re-stocked.

I am out of XF-1 also and my hobby shop did not have it when I was there so I have been using the Vallejo Model Color black I bought a long time ago to try out.

It seems to be good paint although this black is more satin than flat.

Hey MikeV... Hobbylinc.com has XF-1 in stock now.  Looks like Tamiya is finally beginning to re-stock its distribution channels.

Jesse, thanks for the update. I use Tamiya paints for all my basic colors. Plus I work in a hobby shop, so now I can tell my boss what's up!

Thanks Bill. I need to check out the LHS and see if they have any yet.

I hope they do switch back to their old formula. Both airbrush well, but the new one leave something to be desired when handbrushing.

Unfortunately, I might have to switch back to using Model Master Enamels.  I have three hobby stores around me, only one carries Tamiya Acrylics.  They all carry MM paints.   Because of shipping costs and wait times, I just can't justify ordering Tamiya paints online.  Oh well.  I really like Tamiya paints too.

As one who manufactures paint, I can tell you that several forces come into play that can interupt production. The raw materials that are used to formulate the paint or the packaging to bottle the paint.

I have bottles which I cannot source caps. You'd think there is a standard, well yes there is but companies come and go as do their products. Companies try to offer a product that appeals to as many customers as they can, hence they change designs which impacts everyone using those items. A slight change in shape or size can trigger problems for the user, namely labels don't fit and have to be redesigned and sourced. Unless a company produces their own bottles, they'll run into situations like this occasionally.

The biggest barrier producers face is countries who change their labeling laws. In some cases companies get a lead time before the changes go into effect to clear the supplies in the supply chain. Sometimes the rules change immediately and those in the chain have to be pulled and relabeled. Either way it usually interupts the supply to the consumers.

I don't know if Tamiya is or isn't changing vendors, only time will tell us for sure. As popular as their paints are they must be losing money with this hiccup in the supply chain. Maybe they sold the paint division to someone else?

I just went to HobbyTown USA and they are still low on stock and have no XF-1 yet.

I ordered a bigger size bottle of XF-1, XF-53 and XF-62 from Tower Hobbies so when they get here I should be set for a while.
