How to deal with an over shiny finish ??
Posted by Viper Has The Lead on Thursday, December 27, 2007 1:33 PM
Good day one and all,
Thinking ahead here. Working on my Revell 1:32 Hawker Hunter, camo done now [not going to mention how hard that was to brush on], all sorted and 'Future' shiny.
Perfect for the transfers (decals), but I think it's a little 'too' shiny even for a Brit bird of the era [1960's], even though they did keep them very clean. I've done some tests on the camo colours and a semi matt is a bit too dull, any advice on how I can cut back the shine ? Bearing in mind that at the moment I'll be brush painting the coat on. Can I doctor the 'Future' ? What would I put in it ? UK based so I don't have access to Model Master or Testors stuff here.
No hurry, as there are a gazillion transfers (decals) to apply.
All the best,
Mick C.

Tamiya XF-21 Flat Base and Future.  Start at about 6 parts Future to 1 part XF-21.  Try it on scrap and adjust the ratio until you get the desired level of matte.

Thanks very much Scott,
The penny dropped soon as I read your post, of course Future is acrylic based !! Will start some tests tonight.
All the best,
Mick C.

Don't go any lower than 3 parts Future to one part flat base though. Below this, it'll start to take on a translucent white sort of look.

Thanks for the tip Phil,
Will prob start with 100% Future and just take it down bit by bit, worth the time as it's a learning experience anyways and I am looking for a shine but not the almost mirror sheen I have now, lol. Can't even try it on the floor as I'm all carpet here Big Smile [:D]
