Future all of the Model

Hello,

I read somewhere that you can spray future in just the ares of the model where the decals are going instead of spraying the whole model. Is this ok to do when a dull coat will be applied over the whole model later?

Thanks George

I did an F-14 many moons ago, and I applied glosscote on just the areas where the decals were going.  I oversprayed the whole model with dullcote and some of the glosscote underneath actually showed through a little.  In my case it would have been better if I had glossed the whole model, applied wash and decals, and then dullcoted the whole model afterwards.  It may not be an issue as much with Future, but if this model is intended to be a showpiece it may be best to give a full, even coat of Future first.

I've done the last couple of my kits this way, that is using Future on the decaled areas only.  They were Academy kits, so I initially attempted this out of necessity only.  But it worked well.  When I airbrushed MM Dullcoat over the entire model, the finish appeared uniform.  The only time coverage didn't look so good was when I brushed the dullcoat on.  Airbrushing it seems to do the trick.  If it has to be hand applied, make sure it is very, very well stirred.  That's worked a few times when I placed decals on some interior locations (cockpits, etc.).  But it's been a long time since I've actually 'Futured' the entire model before dullcoating it.  Hope this helps.

I always spray the entire model with Future.  It avoids the possibility of tonal variation & I need it to do detail washes in any case.
