Can I thin Floquil paints with mineral spirits?
Posted by echolmberg on Saturday, February 9, 2008 10:55 AM

Hi gang,

I'm about to put the finishing touches on my F-89 and was thinking about using my new bottle of Floquil Old Silver on it.  Two questions came to mind and I really wanted to ask everyone's opinion on it.

First, I've never used Floquil.  The bottle says to thin it with 25% thinner for airbrushing.  Can I use mineral spirits to thin it or is something else recommended?

Secondly, Do you think Floquil Old Silver will make for a good representation of natural metal on the F-89 or should I use something with more shine to it such as Alclad Aluminum or Stainless Steel?

I would really love to hear what you all have to say!  Smile [:)]

Thanks!

Eric

Floquil is a very hot enamel (used to be lacquer, but was reformulated when Testors bought them), so mineral spirits should work.  Personally, I use Lacquer thinner for Floquil paints & it works very well.  Floquil Old Silver will give a more weathered, duller appearance than the Alclad or Testors Aluminum.  I wouldn't use Stainless Steel on a P-80, unless you want to mask off various panels for some tonal variation.  Alclad Dark Aluminum actually would be a better choice for that process.

Regards,  Rick
