doing a first wash...HELP!
Posted by dostacos on Saturday, February 16, 2008 5:24 PM

I have been using Tamiya paint {Tamiya models using their call outs}

once I have painted the models I have dry brushed{little paint on the brush, mainly rust, silver etc.}

then used the Tamiya powders.

I tried using mineral spirits but neither my oil paint and the Tamiya paints will suspend in thet mineral spirits {my oil based paint can be used in water}

when I use Isopropyl alcohol {70% with little paint} it goes right through the paint {some have been sitting for several weeks so the paint is dry}

what should I do? seal the first layer? if so with what. if not, what should I use for the wash?

thanks,

If your "oil based paint" can be used with water as a solvent, it is not oil based. It is therefore incompatible with organic solvents such as mineral spirits.

I am not familiar with Tamiya powders, but if they will not mix with mineral spirits, they must have a composition compatible with water or alcohol.

Tamiya acrylic paints are highly soluble in isopropyl alcohol, which will readily dissolve and remove fully cured Tamiya acrylics.

To solve your problem, either seal your base paint coat with a clear enamel and use the acrylic paints and pigments you have, or use true oil based paints and compatible dry pigments.
