Flat coat?
Posted by KJ200 on Thursday, February 21, 2008 4:59 PM
I've been using Future and Tamiya X-21 to produce a flat coat for about a year now with mixed results.

Looks fine on a light coloured airframe, but over any dark areas shows up a milky white.

I've tried re-mixing, following the directions on Swanny's site, with no joy, same problem.

What am I doing wrong?

I currently have a Tamiya 1/48 Gekko stalled on the bench because of this as it wears an all over IJN dark green camo, which really shows up the white speckles.

Failing that, can anyone recommend a decent flat coat, preferably acrylic?

Karl,

Many of us swear by Poly Scale flat finish acrylic. It is in the model railroad line of paints and it's great stuff.

If you're still getting a white haze, can't you just add more Future?  If it's just white specks, maybe you're not mixing it well enough.

Mike, I'll have to see if I can find the Polyscale in the UK.

The only supplier I know of here, only ships paints with kits for some reason.

Redrider, I've tried adding more Future, which does remove the flecks issue, but then leaves me with a satin finish which is is not always appropriate.

I thought about the mixing idea too. Stirred for several minutes, but still to the same effect.

Has anyone tried either Microscale Flat or Vallejo Modelair Matte Varnish?

Thanks

Karl-I've used Model Master acrylic flat, reduced with MM acrylic thinner with no issues.  Dunno if it is available over on your side of the pond though.

Bob, thanks for the heads up.

I'll have to google some suppliers in the UK.

Thanks again.

I've used pollyscaled flat (favorite), MM acrylic flat, and the Microscale flat. They all do a good job. I've alos used Badger satin - its not a dead flat if that's what you want.

Waikong thanks for that.

I've ordered some Vallejo Model Air Matte Varnish, and some Microscale Flat to try.

Until these arrive, the Gekko is on hold, as I don't want to screw up 6 weeks work.

Thanks again.
