ModelMaster Custom Lacquer Shelf Life
Posted by Neptune48 on Monday, March 17, 2008 2:40 PM

Does anyone happen to know how long after initially opening the bottle the stuff converts to silly string?

Now I get to strip these parts for a third time.  I guess it's back to Scalecoat II.

If it is true lacquer it should never go bad, just add lacquer thinner when it gets thick.

Well, I have a bottle of Pactra Scale Flats Olive Drab that is at least 35 years old and it is still good!

That is odd.  Until last night I would have agreed with both of you.  My MM Gloss Black Lacquer had thickened a bit so I stirred it up with the little battery operated stirring gizmo, then thinned the batch I was going to spray.  It didn't want to flow, so I kept thinning it until it did, but then it started spraying spider webs—or silly string, whichever description you like best.  All I'm trying to do is lay down a smooth gloss lacquer coat so I can spray an Alclad 2 High Shine finish over it.  I've done that a lot in the past but this time around the cosmic forces of paint have combined against this project.

I had previously shot some flat Interior Black enamel, thinned with lacquer thinner, in the same painting session.  It worked fine and I thoroughly (I think) cleaned the airbrush with lacquer thinner before starting the second color.  I had sprayed just enough before aborting that the parts went right back into the brake fluid last night.

Rats!

Hello,

For what its worth, the first time I thinned Mr. Surfacer 500 to prime with it shot out like silly string as well.  A quick search on the forums yielded the answer.  More thinning was needed.  I did so and the silly string went away.  Theory was that it was drying to fast...  I'm not sure if thats right or not, but more thinner did the trick.
