How to remove a decal without damaging paint?
Posted by gjek on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 6:30 PM
Late last night I decaled a Poesche 956. This morning I noticed that I used the wrong decal on the side (large decal)Banged Head [banghead]. How do I remove the decal without damaging the enamel paint? I used some Testers decal solvent to try and get the decal to contour to some vents. Thanks, Greg.

Apply some masking tape over the decal, pull the tape off the decal should lift off with the tape. Repeat until you have it all off. Clean up any tape residue and your set to begin again.

I use the same technique as Gerald and most of the time have great success doing it that way.  However, on occasion small reminents of decal remain that no amount of tape will lift.  For those times, I make a chisel shaped pointed instrument out of a flat toothpick.  I then apply setting solution (vinegar works also) and after it has a chance to soften the remaining decal, wet the area again and gently push against the side of the decal.  You might have to rewet the decal a couple of times, but the decal usually comes off with a minimal amount of damage to the paint.

if you need to remove a decal or sticker, don’t use a metal razor blade as its easy to scratch the paint. Depending on the size of the job (i.e. small or large) I know of 2 products. There is a video demo at www.decalstickerremover.com. (one does big areas and the other small areas) Hope this helps. P.S if you need a cheap product that is chemical free to remove the goo or adhesive, try eucalyptus oil (its chemical free and available at most supermarkets)
