I don't use laquers so I'm not sure about that.  I would test it first if you can, by trying it on some scrap plastic or a "junk" model painted with the same paints and cured the same.

Laquer is very "hot" ( aggressive) and can easily soften or eat through underlying paints, but maybe not when they've had time to cure.

Hopfully someone else knows?

Is Testors "Gloss Lacquer Overcoat" okay to shoot over Pollyscale and MM acrylics?

I always use a clear coat before washes, or any other step that includes aggressive thinners.  Not to say that the thinners WILL destroy a properly cured acrylic, but why run the risk?  Same goes for acrylics, even though the thinner isn't aggressive, it COULD soften or dissolve the underlying paint.

Also, if you're applying decals you should always seal them under a clearcoat before doing any sort of enamel or oil wash.

First Wash Questions
Posted by SDT on Saturday, April 12, 2008 12:22 AM

I'm doing my first wash on a model and I had a few questions about what types of paint work together.

  • Would an enamel wash over acrylic paint destroy the acrylic without a clear coat?
  • Is it okay to do an acrylic wash over an acrylic base?

Thanks.
